LONG BEACH, Calif. (CBS) ― Colle Carpenter (larger size)
An attacker shoved him into a campus bathroom stall and slashed his chest.
A transgender student spoke out about the brutal assault during a rally at California State University, Long Beach on Thursday.
More details about the hate crime that happened two week ago on the CSULB campus were revealed by the victim himself.
It was a disgraceful act of ignorance that inspired a story of courage.
Hundreds marched for tolerance –- chanting for a world free of hatred and violence.
The Long Beach rally centered around Colle Carpenter, a transgender student.
He gripped a cane as he walked to the podium.
“I’ve been terrified to come back to campus,” Carpenter said.
Carpenter addressed a crowd of supporters and revealed the unthinkable.
“The person who attacked me knew my name, pushed me back in a stall and carved ‘it’ into my chest,” Carpenter said.
He was attacked on campus, in the men’s restroom.
Carpenter said the attacker tried to cut away his self-respect.
“For those of you who don’t know why ‘it’ is such a derogatory term, it takes away a person’s humanity. It takes away their personhood. It makes them less than human,” he said.
For critics angry at the way the university handled Carpenter’s attack, he said people should focus on catching his attacker.
“Know that what happened to me, didn’t just happen to me. It happened to the entire community. Those of use who are visibly Queer, those of us who are out and about being Queer are scared,” he said.
The anti-hate rally revealed another campus attack two days ago at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
In that attack, a gay student was verbally and physically assaulted. But the perpetuator was arrested and the victim is recovering.
CSULB police are still looking for Carpenter’s attacker.
For now, Carpenter said he is ready to move forward and finish his master’s degree.
